'Those concluding hours tested every limit': British duo complete extraordinary journey in Down Under after paddling across the vast Pacific

One last sunrise to sunset. Another day battling through merciless swells. Another round of raw palms clutching relentless paddles.

Yet after traversing 8,000+ sea miles across the ocean – an epic five-and-a-half-month journey over the Pacific Ocean that included close encounters with whales, defective signaling devices and sweet treat crises – the waters delivered a last obstacle.

A gusting 20-knot wind near Cairns continuously drove their compact craft, their boat Velocity, off course from land that was now frustratingly within reach.

Supporters anticipated on shore as an expected noon touchdown shifted to 2pm, followed by 4pm, then early evening. Finally, at 6.42pm, they reached the Cairns sailing club.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe expressed, at last on firm earth.

"The wind was pushing us off the channel, and we honestly thought we weren't going to make it. We ended up outside the channel and thought we might have to swim to shore. To ultimately arrive, after extensive preparation, seems absolutely amazing."

The Monumental Voyage Commences

The British pair – aged 28 and 25 respectively – pushed off from Lima, Peru on 5 May (a first try in April was derailed by a rudder failure).

Across nearly half a year on water, they maintained 50 nautical miles daily, working as a team through daytime hours, single rower overnight while her crewmate slept a bare handful of hours in a confined sleeping area.

Perseverance and Difficulties

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a saltwater conversion device and an onboard growing unit for micro-greens, the women counted on an unpredictable photovoltaic arrangement for a fraction of the power they've needed.

For much of their journey through the expansive ocean, they lacked directional instruments or location transmitters, making them essentially invisible, hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The pair have borne 9-metre waves, traversed marine highways and endured raging storms that, periodically, silenced all of their electronics.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Still they maintained progress, each pull following the last, during intensely warm periods, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They achieved an unprecedented feat as the pioneering women's team to cross the southern Pacific by rowing, non-stop and unsupported.

Additionally they collected in excess of £86k (A$179,000) for the Outward Bound Trust.

Existence Onboard

The duo made every effort to maintain communication with civilization away from their compact craft.

During the 140s of their journey, they declared a "cocoa crisis" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with another 1,600 kilometers ahead – but permitted themselves the luxury of unwrapping a portion to celebrate England's Red Roses winning the Rugby World Cup.

Individual Perspectives

Payne, hailing from inland Yorkshire, lacked ocean experience prior to her independent Atlantic journey during 2022 establishing a record.

She has now mastered another ocean. But there were moments, she acknowledged, when they doubted their success. Beginning on the sixth day, a route across the globe's vastest waters appeared insurmountable.

"Our energy was failing, the water-maker pipes burst, however following multiple fixes, we achieved an alternative solution and simply continued struggling with reduced energy for the rest of the crossing. Every time something went wrong, we just looked at each other and went, 'of course it has!' But we kept going."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. What was great was that we worked hard together, we problem-solved together, and we consistently shared identical objectives," she remarked.

Rowe hails from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she paddled the Atlantic, walked the southwestern English coastline, scaled the Kenyan peak and cycled across Spain. Additional challenges probably remain.

"Our collaboration proved incredibly rewarding, and we're eagerly anticipating future expeditions as a team again. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
