The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
